Whilst in Taunton I acquired skills in Urodynamic Assessment female urinary
tract disorders using a four Channel Disa system and with the co-operation of
the Department of Urology I was responsible for setting up and running a
urodynamic service for the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. First
experience gained in Colposcopy. I also initiated and ran two Dip. Obstetric
Courses for SHO’s in the region.

responsibility for their deployment and organisation of rosters. Other
administrative duties included being an active committee member of the Division

placed on Feto-Maternal Medicine.

Instrumental in introducing many minimally invasive operative procedures to
Christchurch. Currently proficient in Colposcopy and treatment of the dysplastic
cervix, hysteroscopy, both performed under general anaesthesia and local
anaesthesia, all areas of minimally invasive gynaecological surgery, including
laparoscopic hysterectomy and laparoscopic pelvic floor repair, laparoscopic
colposuspension and paravaginal repair and laparoscopic excision of
endometriosis, oophorectomy, treatment of ectopic pregnancy and ovarian
cystectomy etc. Responsible to initiation and management of urodynamic services
at The Oxford Clinic.
Obstetric practice consisted of working with a team of midwives offering
comprehensive care for both routine and complicated pregnancies. Proficient at
the delivery of twins, breech presentation, Ventouse, Neville Barnes forceps,
Kielland’s forceps, caesarean section, and management of all antenatal and
intrapartum and post partum emergencies.

Returned to take up gynaecological duties at Christchurch Women’s Hospital and
on-call O&G duties and private obstetric practice discontinued to allow time for
public hospital duties. The job description consists of a gynaecology outpatient
clinic and a gynaecology operating list with a particular special interest in
endoscopic surgery and one of two consultants responsible for training The
Oxford Clinic/J & J Fellow in Endoscopic Surgery who is jointly funded by
Christchurch Women’s Hospital and The Oxford Clinic. The job also entails an
on-call commitment to Christchurch Women’s Hospital Labour Ward and general
gynaecological acute admissions.
RESEARCH / PUBLICATIONS / PRESENTATIONS
Occult laparoscopy incision at the lower umbilical verge:
A paper published by the British Medical Journal 1988, Vol 296:753-754
demonstrating the cosmetic advantages of a vertical as opposed to a horizontal
incision at the umbilicus. It was also shown histologically and by experiment
that Langer’s lines run vertically at the lower umbilical verge further
supporting the preference
